Watanabe & Gotou
Hi, I'm Watanabe, a consultant at BKC. I joined BKC in May 2020 after spending about 10 years at a consulting firm and 5 years in a major insurance company division. Right now, I'm working as a consultant and also helping build Berkeley Consulting's organization. I'm Gotou, a consultant who joined the company in May 2021. I spent about 10 years as a system engineer and then worked for a major consulting firm for 5 years. Since switching jobs, I've been working on projects as a consultant and collaborating with Mr. Watanabe on building the organization.

Inoue Manami
Thank you very much! Quick question, what kind of company is Berkeley Consulting to you?

Watanabe & Gotou
(Watanabe) What struck me first was the idea of a 'flat organization'! Our company is relatively young, founded in 2019, so we have a small team, and overall, I feel like we're a close-knit group. We have experienced members from major companies, including our president, Mr. Sumita, providing lots of chances for communication and collaboration between these experienced professionals and the younger generation! (Gotou) That's true. Being able to interact with a diverse range of members, which might not be possible in a large corporation, is crucial. Younger members get to learn from the more experienced ones, and vice versa. It creates a dynamic environment where everyone is constantly learning and growing!

Inoue Manami
I see! What kind of members do you have in Berkeley Consulting?

Watanabe & Gotou
(Gotou) Our team consists of two main groups: seasoned members with significant consulting/IT experience from top consulting firms, and potential members like recent graduates and young individuals (former SIer). Our experienced members bring in-depth expertise from major firms, specializing in areas like finance and manufacturing. On the other hand, our younger members are adventurous and keen on tackling fresh challenges. (Watanabe) Yeah, there's quite a mix of experience and age, isn't there? This might be related to the flat structure I mentioned earlier. Regardless of background, age, or skills, everyone here has a positive attitude toward building something new and the ability to take initiative to enhance their value in the market. (Gotou) Yeah, there are a lot of people here who are forward-thinking. They all joined this newly established consulting firm because they believed in the philosophy of our representative, Mr. Sumita.

Inoue Manami
What do you actually find attractive about Berkeley Consulting?

Watanabe & Gotou
(Gotou) After being with BC for about six months, I've noticed that the range of tasks I can be part of is much broader. In larger companies, work is often divided in a vertical structure with specific roles, limiting the skills and experiences one can gain. However, at BC, I get to engage in a wide variety of tasks, from closing deals to actually managing them. One of the significant perks of working at BKC is that I now have the opportunity to do things that were not possible in my previous job, or if they were, it would have taken many years to reach that point (Watanabe) The freedom to make decisions in projects and the quick decision-making process are truly attractive. Moreover, the most appealing aspect is being part of building the organization; discussing aspects like recruitment and the development of internal systems together.

Inoue Manami
Lastly, what characteristics or qualities do individuals need to be a good fit for Berkeley Consulting?

Watanabe & Gotou
(Watanabe) I'd say it's people who are self-driven. In the consulting field and in the culture of a startup-like company, we're in an environment where learning is an ongoing journey. So, those who enjoy gaining knowledge and skills would thrive here. Additionally, rather than someone with a rigid mindset, individuals who are adaptable, eager to explore different areas, and ready to take on any challenge would fit right in. (Gotou) Absolutely! Those who wait for instructions might find it tough here. Being proactive, taking the initiative, and having a strong desire to enhance your skills are the qualities that would make someone a good fit for this job!

Inoue Manami
Thank you very much Mr. Watanabe and Mr. Gotou!
