We will learn information about Berkeley Consulting—their team members, their organizational structure, and details about the company as well. Please begin by introducing yourself!

Hi, I am Watanabe, a consultant at Berkeley Consulting. I joined Berkeley in May 2020 after spending about ten (10) years at a consulting firm and five (5) years in a major insurance company division. Right now, I am working as a consultant and also helping build Berkeley Consulting's structure. I'm Gotou, a consultant who joined the company in May 2021. I spent about ten (10) years as a systems engineer and then worked for a major consulting firm for five (5) years. Since switching jobs, I have been working on projects as a consultant and collaborating with Mr. Watanabe on building the organization.

Thank you very much! First of all, what kind of company is Berkeley Consulting?

Watanabe & Gotou

Watanabe & Gotou

(Watanabe) The first thing that comes to mind is that it is a "flat organization". Our company is relatively young, having only been founded in 2019. We have a small team, and overall, I feel like we are a close-knit group. We have experienced members who came from major companies, including our president, Mr. Sumita, providing lots of chances for communication and collaboration between these experienced professionals and the younger generation. (Gotou) That is true. Being able to interact with a diverse range of members - which might not be possible in a large corporation - is crucial. Younger members get to learn from the more experienced ones and vice versa, creating a dynamic environment where everyone is constantly learning and growing.

I see! What kind of members do you have in Berkeley Consulting?

Watanabe & Gotou

Watanabe & Gotou

(Gotou) Our team consists of two main groups: seasoned members with significant consulting or IT experience from top consulting firms, and high-potential members like recent graduates and young individuals (former system integration members). Our experienced members bring in-depth expertise from major firms, specializing in areas like finance and manufacturing. On the other hand, our younger members are adventurous and keen on tackling fresh challenges. (Watanabe) Yes, there is quite a mix of experience and age groups, isn't there? This might be related to the flat structure I mentioned earlier - regardless of background, age, or skills, everyone here has a positive attitude toward building something new and has the ability to proactively enhance their value in the market. (Gotou) Yes, there are a lot of people here who are forward-thinking. They all joined this newly established consulting firm because they believed in the philosophy of our president, Mr. Sumita.

I see! What do you actually find attractive about Berkeley Consulting?

Watanabe & Gotou

Watanabe & Gotou

(Gotou) Now that I have been with Berkeley for about six (6) months, I have noticed that the range of work I can be involved in is much broader. In larger companies, work is often divided into a vertical structure with specific roles, limiting the skills and experience one can gain. At Berkeley, I get to engage in a wide variety of work - from closing deals to actually managing them. One of the attractive points of working at Berkeley is that I now have the opportunity to do things that I could not do in my previous job, or even if I could, it would have taken many years to do so. (Watanabe) The freedom to make decisions in projects and the quick decision-making process truly make the company attractive. Moreover, the most appealing aspect is being part of building the organization; discussing aspects like recruitment and developing internal systems together.

Thank you. Lastly, what characteristics or qualities do individuals need to have to be a good fit for Berkeley Consulting?

Watanabe & Gotou

Watanabe & Gotou

(Watanabe) I would say it is people who are self-driven. Both the consulting field and the organizational culture of a startup company mean that you have to keep learning. Those who enjoy gaining knowledge and skills will thrive here. Additionally, rather than someone with a rigid mindset, individuals who are adaptable, eager to explore different areas, and ready to take on any challenge will fit right in. (Gotou) Absolutely! Those who wait for instructions might find it tough here. Being proactive and having a strong desire to enhance your skills are the qualities that will make someone a good fit for this job!
