Mr. R.T.
Thank you for having me today!

Kazunari Horio
Thank you as well! Can you share a brief overview of the experiences you've gained throughout your extensive career?

Mr. R.T.
When I was in school, my initial goal was to become an accountant. However, before obtaining the necessary qualifications, I started working for a consulting firm affiliated with an auditing company. Over time, I transitioned into working solely as a consultant. I accumulated experience at prominent consulting firms, and in my last position before joining Berkeley, I played a role in establishing a new consulting firm.

Kazunari Horio
When you were a student, did you ever consider pursuing a career as a consultant?

Mr. R.T.
I didn't think about it back then. During my student days and early career, the concept of consultants wasn't widely recognized. Clients were still figuring out how to engage with consultants at that time.

Kazunari Horio
I can't imagine that the awareness of consultants was low back then, considering the current situation.

Mr. R.T.
Back then, IT consultants were seen as 'experienced senior software engineers.' I used to provide advice to clients not only on IT matters but also on business issues that were bothering them. It brought me joy when I could provide a helpful solution, and I felt satisfied when I could bring attention to something the customer hadn't noticed.

Kazunari Horio
You really liked the idea of consulting, right? So, what made you choose to join Berkeley, a new company that wasn't well-known at the time?

Mr. R.T.
I joined Berkeley because I wanted to create and shape an organization. In my previous job, I had the experience of establishing a consulting organization, but I started feeling limited by the directives from the higher-ups. During that period, an acquaintance introduced me to Berkley through a recruiter. Initially, I just planned to hear them out, but before I realized it, I became a part of the company.

Kazunari Horio
I'm looking forward to seeing how you contribute to Berkeley's growth! It's been a year and a half since you joined, right?

Mr. R.T.
Primarily, my focus is on IT-related tasks. I assist our highly engaged clients with IT strategy planning and PMO (Project Management Office) work. I also take on responsibilities like vendor selection and management from the client's viewpoint. In my latest project, I played a role in crafting a business improvement plan for a client.

Kazunari Horio
You’ve been involved in many projects since you came to Berkeley! Is there a big difference in the way you work at Berkeley compared to the major consulting firm you used to work for?

Mr. R.T.
The way of working is quite different between large, established organizations and startups like Berkeley. While at Berkeley, you may often work independently, in a large company, you typically form a team of at least 4 or 5 people and provide services with the strength of the organization. In large companies, knowledge tends to be concentrated, and past materials and know-how are used to work efficiently and quickly. In my case, I think I can adapt to Berkeley because I have some of this knowledge in my head. I believe that the knowledge I gained at major firms will be useful in the future, so I hope to leverage it effectively.

Kazunari Horio
What do you believe sets Berkeley apart from other consulting firms?

Mr. R.T.
The greatest aspect of having 'nothing' is the freedom to explore endless possibilities. However, some clients may express concerns about our lack of established practices, which could be considered a disadvantage. Nonetheless, I believe it's our responsibility to address and overcome this concern independently.

Kazunari Horio
The idea that 'Nothing is attractive' is intriguing! So, in your view, what kind of person would be an ideal match for Berkeley now?

Mr. R.T.
I think in the business world, there are two types of individuals: those who can build something out of nothing and those who can take something small and make it much bigger. Currently, Berkeley is starting from scratch. So, I believe those who enjoy creating something out of nothing and are drawn to that challenge would be a good fit. On the flip side, expanding what already exists and making it larger can come later.

Kazunari Horio
What are the important things in creating something from 0 to 1?

Mr. R.T.
I believe it's about having unique ideas and taking action. Berkeley, in its early stages, won't succeed by copying the approaches of large firms. It's essential to establish a new organization with a fresh perspective. Even in a specialized field, it's preferable for people to see Berkeley as more dependable than larger firms in that particular area. I have great expectations for young individuals who can generate their own ideas about different aspects like business domains and corporate culture and drive progress independently.

Kazunari Horio
What principles or beliefs are most important to you when working for a consulting firm?

Mr. R.T.
I prioritize the customer. If the customer is satisfied, it brings me joy, and their happiness is my ultimate reward. However, I acknowledge that this mindset might be considered traditional. Not to undermine the importance of customers, but nowadays, more young individuals prioritize their own personal growth. I see this as positive. My approach is 'putting the customer first, so I'll strive to grow,' while the perspective of younger generations is 'by growing first, I can deliver excellent service to the customer,' ultimately leading to contented customers.

Kazunari Horio
Lastly, please tell us what dreams you would like to achieve at Berkeley!

Mr. R.T.
Anyhow, I'm counting on the younger folks! I'm an old guy with a background in big corporations, and my ideas haven't shifted much from my time in those large firms. I figure I'll let the younger generation take the lead on fresh ideas, and I'll be there to support and back them up. I'm looking forward to witnessing the new shape of the company that the younger generation is striving for.

We interviewed Mr. R.T., who joined Berkeley Consulting in August 2020. He's a consultant with extensive experience in the consulting industry from the time when the term "consultant" wasn't as widely recognized as it is now. We ask Mr. R.T. the qualities Berkeley is looking for in people today and what the company has to offer.
