Today, we are interviewing Ms. A.N., who joined as a new graduate in April 2019. She's one of the founding members, actively contributing to Berkeley since its beginning. Surprisingly, she didn't initially plan on becoming a consultant! We will delve into Ms. A.N.'s journey, from joining as a fresh graduate to becoming a seasoned consultant, and explore what makes Berkeley appealing to her!

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

Thank you for having me today!

Kazunari Horio

Kazunari Horio

Thank you, likewise! Could you please tell us about yourself and share a few stories from your time in school?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

At university, I studied marketing in the economics and business administration department. I was just an average university student. Looking back now, I wish I had paid more attention in class... In my senior year, I did a long-term internship at an IT company, and that is when I started to develop an interest in the IT industry.

If you liked IT, how did you end up at Berkeley, a consulting firm?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

During my job hunting, I did not consider consulting firms at all. I was originally scheduled to join Hellonet, a group company, but during the final interview, the President and the then-head of the consulting division invited me to join their newly launched consulting division. That is how I ended up joining the consulting industry.

That is quite an interesting way to get started! (laughs) Typically, if you're not interested in consulting, you might decline such an offer. So, what made you decide to join Hellonet? What drew you to the company?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

Starting a business right after graduation is something you can only do in a startup. I felt excited to be offered such an opportunity. Being the kind of person who finds interest in unique experiences, I thought it would be fascinating. So, I joined Hellonet, and it felt like an adventure. The company's open culture, with easy access to higher-ups like the president and other management members, appealed to me. I believed this environment would provide ample chances for younger employees like me to share our opinions with the management.

I see! So initially, it was not that consulting seemed interesting, but rather that starting a business sounded exciting! I'm sure there were challenges since the launch until now, but honestly, did you ever wish you had chosen the IT industry or a big company instead?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

Not at all. Sure, when we kicked off, we were facing constant losses and numerous challenges, making things really tough. If things had stayed that way, I might have questioned my decision and thought that I should have joined a different company. However, now that we are turning a profit and shaping up as a consulting company, I am happy to have been part of the business from its very start.

Ms. A.N. confidently says, "Not at all" - that's impressive! Almost four years have passed, but has your perception of consulting shifted since you began working until now?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

When I started working here, my then-boss shared to me, "Consulting might seem glamorous, but in reality, it's rough work, so be prepared." That left a strong impression on me. As I became more experienced, I learned that it is not just about solving clients' problems; understanding clients' feelings in daily meetings and conversations is crucial. Now, I believe that this is a job where daily effort really matters.

Kazunari Horio

Kazunari Horio

That is true, I definitely had a glamorous idea of consulting, too. I believe it is crucial to build up experience every day, regardless of your job. Can you tell me about the work and projects you have done at Berkeley?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

After my training, I jumped into a project promoting SDGs for a construction company. Since I still did not know much at that time, my main tasks were creating materials and taking meeting minutes… (laughs) Following that, I spent around six (6) months supporting PMO on an inside sales branch expansion project for a major precision equipment company. Currently, I have been working as a PMO on an RPA implementation support project for a major telecommunications company for about a year. Apart from the projects, I also had some valuable experiences, such as launching a website, creating internal rules, and designing workflows.

You were active in projects as a consultant and also took on internal tasks at Berkeley! You must have gained a lot of different experiences. Can you share the most rewarding and challenging parts of starting your career as a consultant right after graduating?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

It is not exactly as a consultant, but being part of a new business launch was a great experience for me as a recent graduate. I encountered various challenges during the launch, but it was valuable to witness firsthand the speed with which we dealt with issues - which is typical in a startup company. On the flip side, the most challenging aspect was understanding and applying the standard practices and norms of consulting firms, as taught by my boss, who was from a well-known consulting company. Since I had no prior consulting experience and had not even attended any briefing sessions, it was quite a challenge. (laughs)

Kazunari Horio

Kazunari Horio

In your opinion, what makes consulting appealing?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

I work with clients in different industries, and each company's work atmosphere is unique - offering a lot of learning opportunities. Currently, I am part of an RPA implementation project with a foreign vendor, so I communicate in English daily. We have meetings and chat in English with people from the U.S. and India. Dealing with various nationalities, cultures, and values can be confusing, but it is also thrilling.

Kazunari Horio

Kazunari Horio

Working with clients from different industries is a great way to grow! What are the important things you keep in mind while working at Berkeley?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

I do not think it is enough for a consultant to just follow the client's orders like "Do this" or "Fix this problem". What is crucial is how much value I can add on my own and meet or exceed the client's quality standards. That's why I make a conscious effort to be proactive in my work.

Kazunari Horio

Kazunari Horio

You are a wonderful consultant who is proactive and anticipates what the client needs - very impressive! Do you have any dreams or goals you would like to achieve at Berkeley in the future?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

Personally, I want to work with different IT products. Berkeley is a digital transformation (DX) consulting business, so I aim to contribute to more than just robotic process automation (RPA). I also want to be part of many projects at a good pace. Right now, I still lack the knowledge and skills to deliver results in a short timeframe. My plan is to keep learning eagerly and gaining experience so that I can excel in any project I take on.

What do you, one of the founding members, expect from Berkeley in the future?

Ms. A.N.

Ms. A.N.

In the past, we had a lot of experienced folks, but lately, we are seeing younger members - making our organization livelier. Moving forward, I hope we can grow the business alongside people who are eager to take on challenges without fear of failure!
