This time, we had a chat with Mr. H.S., who joined the company in January 2022 with some work experience. He initially studied mathematics in college with the aim of becoming a math teacher. We delved into why he shifted gears from pursuing a teaching career and joined an IT company right after graduating, why he opted for Berklee during his job search, and what aspirations he holds for the future!

Mr. H.S.

I'm pleased to meet you today!

Nice to meet you as well! Could you briefly share what you were up to from your school days until just before you joined Berkeley?

Mr. H.S.

Mr. H.S.

During college, I was part of a science department called "Integrated Mathematics and Science." Even though the department aimed to explain phenomena like traffic jams and zebra patterns using mathematical formulas, I focused on pure mathematics. In reality, most of my time was spent working part-time jobs. After graduating, I worked for about four years at a system core company within a major corporate group. My responsibilities included defining requirements and overseeing external design. I continued working for that IT company for four years post-graduation. Originally, I had aspirations to become a teacher, contemplating teaching as my sole career until the winter of my junior year in college. However, as I harbored a dream of starting an education-related business and bringing about change in the education sector, I realized that teaching alone wouldn't fulfill that goal. I promptly changed direction, deciding to join an IT-related company. My choice was influenced by the anticipation that society would become more systems-oriented in the future, and I wanted to gain insights from that perspective.

Going to an IT company for the future... That's cool. Did your view of consultants shift from when you were looking for a job as a recent graduate to now?

Mr. H.S.

Mr. H.S.

When I was looking for a job as a new graduate, I saw consulting as a "cool" profession that requires logical thinking. I believed it involved persuading others with a wealth of knowledge and various skills. I expected it to be challenging, and while my perception hasn't changed much after gaining work experience, I've noticed a shift in the working environment due to government policies, leading to a reduction in demanding work.

So, your view of the consulting industry improved after gaining work experience! Did you specifically target the consulting sector in your recent job search?

Mr. H.S.

Mr. H.S.

I considered sales briefly but mainly concentrated on consulting. I wasn't in a rush, so I waited for companies to approach me directly without using a recruiter. Luckily, I received multiple offers and interviewed with a few to learn more about the consulting field. I didn't receive many sales offers, partly because the industry was different from my previous job.

Switching to a completely different industry can be challenging... You mentioned that you received several offers, but what made you decide to join Berkeley?

Mr. H.S.

Mr. H.S.

I joined Berkeley because I believe that to eventually start my own business and make a difference in the social system, it's crucial to "witness the company's growth process firsthand" and "cultivate my own sales skills." I saw the potential to achieve this at Berkeley. Another key factor was the passionate vision of President Sumita. When discussing his ideas for the company and his vision for society, I sensed a strong alignment with my own values.

It is true that President Sumita is a very passionate person! What was it like meeting with such a passionate person?

Mr. H.S.

Absolutely every consultant needs to have sales skills!" he said enthusiastically! I knew I had to go for this one ha-ha. When we chatted online, I got selected for the next interview right away! (I was amazed at how fast the whole process was. I was surprised at the speed of the process. The day after I joined the company, I started working on-site. There are some things that make me nervous, but I'm just going for it!

Kazunari Horio

Incredible speed! There aren't many companies like this. You mentioned earlier that you have some concerns. What aspects of working at Berklee are you excited about and what makes you anxious?

Mr. H.S.

Mr. H.S.

It's a company with exciting challenges, and I'm eager to join, expecting personal growth and development. Also, though not necessarily something to look forward to, I appreciate the positive communication among employees at the company. It's exciting to be part of a workplace with such a culture. As for concerns, I'm anxious about navigating consulting without prior knowledge. I've learned key concepts from books, but I'm ready to dive into the practical side of things, working hard to gain hands-on knowledge.

I see... That's a wonderful ambition! You are going to work as a consultant now, is there anything you value in your work?

Mr. H.S.

Mr. H.S.

It's about gaining trust from customers and forming a solid, reliable relationship. There are various ways to achieve this, and I want to focus on actions that prioritize building trust.
