Today’s interviewee is G.N., who joined the company in January 2022. After obtaining a teaching license, G.N. chose a unique path by not immediately entering the workforce after university. Instead, he spent 2.5 years in Germany as a member of a handball club team. Upon returning to Japan, G.N. became a programmer. We explored his interesting journey of diverse experiences, including the reasons behind aspiring to become a consultant and the decision to join Berkeley.

It is nice to meet you too! I understand that you have a somewhat unique background. Could you tell me about what you have been doing until now?

Mr. G.N.

Mr. G.N.

During my time in university, I focused on studying Sports and Health Sciences while also actively participating in handball. After graduating, I took a bold step and traveled to Germany with a suitcase, approaching the head of a club team to join them. Initially, I played handball without pay, but with determination and hard work, I climbed the ranks and eventually secured a professional contract. However, about a year ago, I had to return to Japan due to family reasons.

Joining a professional handball team, and that too, taking the leap into an overseas team, is quite a courageous move! Did you not consider finding employment in Japan after graduating from university?

Mr. G.N.

Mr. G.N.

When I was a student, my plan was to become a teacher, and just so you know, I have a teaching license for health and physical education in middle and high school. However, I felt that pursuing a teaching career was limiting, and I wanted to explore various options. That's why I decided to give handball a shot. Yet, I didn't see myself playing handball indefinitely. As I contemplated a second career, circumstances led me back to Japan for family reasons. It was then that I felt the desire to embark on something new. I had mentally closed the chapter on my handball playing days. It was a valuable experience and a story worth sharing.

Switching from wanting to be a teacher to becoming a handball player is quite a surprising change! When you returned to Japan, did you start working for a company?

Mr. G.N.

Mr. G.N.

Yes, I returned to Japan around a year ago and started working as a software engineer (SE). While I was in Germany, I noticed the popularity of rental scooters, and it got me thinking about the appeal of a society where people and IT work together. I wanted to contribute to creating systems that reflect this vision. So, after about 3 months of schooling, I began working as an SE, using programming languages like Java and JavaScript. My tasks included developing systems for workflow and applications.

So, your time in Germany influenced your decision to become an SE! But what made you decide to switch careers after being an SE for only about a year?

Mr. G.N.

Mr. G.N.

Because of a merger between companies, things were slowing down at my workplace, and I wasn't comfortable with that. I prefer a fast-paced environment where I can both work and grow quickly, so I decided to explore new job opportunities. In my last job, I spent too much time looking at a computer screen, so…I wanted a job similar to my previous one where I could solve problems while talking to clients, and that's when the idea of becoming a consultant crossed my mind.

I see... You value speed! Then was “speed” a key factor in your decision to Berkeley?

Mr. G.N.

Mr. G.N.

Absolutely! I was searching for a company that values quickness, and I learned that there were enthusiastic young individuals working here, creating an environment where friendly competition fosters personal growth. I discovered Berkeley through a job portal, expecting just a brief overview, but during the initial interviews, I had the opportunity to speak directly with President Sumida, who emphasized the importance of speed. With less work experience than others, I was eager to advance rapidly, and the shared commitment to quick growth led me to choose Berklee. Moreover, President Sumita's approachability and genuine demeanor, despite his leadership role, played a significant role in my decision to join Berkeley.

I can sense that speed is a crucial factor for you! As you step into the consulting world for the first time with Berkeley, what aspects are you excited about, and are there any concerns on your mind?

Mr. G.N.

Mr. G.N.

I'm excited about the chance to learn and grow alongside everyone, even though I'm starting from scratch. The training lead mentioned it took about six months for them to settle in, and I found the speed of the training process intriguing. I'm also eager to gain hands-on experience in this dynamic environment. On the flip side, I'm a bit anxious because I need to learn the ropes from scratch. I don't want to be a burden to my more experienced colleagues, so I'm planning to dedicate myself to daily learning to overcome my worries

Kazunari Horio

Determination to overcome anxiety through diligent studying. Thank you for your encouraging words! You are going to work as a consultant from now on, is there anything that you value in your work?

Mr. G.N.

Mr. G.N.

What I find important about myself is being quick and efficient. Equally important, I aim to build good communication with my clients, striving to earn their trust and likability. Through this process, I aim to enhance my own value.
