Etsuro Sumita
Berkeley Consulting is a place where lots of young individuals are actively working. The idea is to achieve in one year what might typically take ten years, fostering rapid growth and the ability to excel in various fields. The organization, formed in 2019, aims to provide a platform for young leaders to thrive as consultants. Currently, it's in its third phase with around 10 members

Inoue Manami
When we hear about consulting firms, we often think of them as a group of professionals with specialized knowledge. Why did you consider creating an organization centered around young talent?

Etsuro Sumita
When I was launching BKC, I had conversations with consultants from various age groups, and what I honestly felt was that even if the big consulting firms continue their work as usual, they won't achieve significant success. Generally, consultants have a high income and are considered a popular and prestigious profession. However, what they actually do often lacks versatility, and the skills developed as professionals may not remain in high demand for 20 or 30 years. As times change, skills become outdated, but at the same time, salaries tend to increase with age. I strongly felt a sense of urgency regarding the current structure of the consulting industry, where many employees are deemed difficult to handle. When I witnessed a market where consultants with extensive experience were considered unnecessary after reaching retirement age, I pondered on what the ideal role of a consultant should be. I concluded that instead of traditional consultants, we need more daring individuals who are not confined to corporate norms. This is where the flexibility and energy of young people become essential, prompting me to establish a consulting firm crafted by the next generation of members.

Inoue Manami
That makes sense. How did you think about addressing such challenges?

Etsuro Sumita
At BKC, we think the best solution is to trust in the potential of young individuals, give them opportunities to tackle challenges, and help them unleash their full capabilities. For instance, many programmers and engineers tend to continue their careers in similar roles, and those who start as consultants in consulting firms often follow a straightforward path without much variation. This is a common scenario in the professional world. One contributing factor to this is the tendency to say, 'You're not ready yet.' Individuals are sometimes held back from taking on challenges because of their inexperience or limited knowledge, leading to slower growth. Consequently, many people end up following a somewhat predictable career trajectory. We believe that young individuals with the right skills can handle tasks typically reserved for directors and partners in the real world. We are convinced that true growth occurs when individuals actively engage in such roles.

Inoue Manami
Are there any concerns about putting individuals into the field at an early stage?

Etsuro Sumita
In our culture, we don't believe in the idea of 'it's too early'; instead, we encourage learning from mistakes and continuous efforts. I strongly believe that individuals thrive when given more responsibilities early in their careers, so I'm not concerned about that! The young talents in our team are growing at an impressive pace, and I'm amazed by how quickly they develop their skills. I aim to foster even faster growth and build a strong consulting firm led by these young individuals.
Mr. Sumita, it is a pleasure to meet you. To begin with, I would like to ask you about the organization Berkeley Consulting!
